A vers szerkezetileg egyértelműen két részre tagolható. Az első egységet az első és a második sor alkotja, a másodikat a harmadik és a negyedik sor. Ez már a rímképletből is világosan kiderül: A A B B. A verset az teszi igazán nagy művé, hogy egyszerre tartalmaz személyes és általanos igazságokat. Ezt már a felütésnél érzékelhetjük, a költő kétszer szólítja meg a bocit, és ezzel tudatja velünk, hogy valójában nem egy, hanem két bociról van szó. Az egyik boci természetesen a költő, akinek szerelmi bánata van.

Feltűnő, hogy az első szerkezeti egységben egyáltalán nem találhatók meg az igék, már ez is a leülepedettség, elhagyatottság érzetét kelti bennünk. De ezt csak fokozzák a két sorban halmozottan előforduló oppozíciók. A két sor már önmagában is oppozíciót alkot (van egy boci, aki tarka, de nincsen se füle se farka), a 'füle' szó magashangrendűsége is éles ellentétben áll a 'farka' szó mély hangrendűségével, a 'tarka' szó pedig önmagában alkotja a legerősebb oppozíciót, hiszen egyszerre fehér és fekete.

Ennyi ellentét nem lehet véletlen, és nem is utalhat másra, mint a szerelem természetének kettősségére, ami Catullus óta minden jelentős szerelmes vers sajátja. Egy embert látunk magunk előtt, aki bár 'tarka', vagyis a költőiség minden szépségével, rútságával, örömével, bánatával fel van ruházva, mégis hiányérzete van. Ez a hiányérzet minden beteljesületlen szerelem sajátja, a kedvese nélkül a költő sem érzi teljes embernek magát, és ezt vetíti elénk nagyon találóan egy fületlen és farkatlan boci képében.

A második szerkezeti egységben csak fokozódik a magányosság és az üresség érzete. Itt jelenik meg a versben szereplő egyetlen ige, ez viszont annál kérlelhetetlenebbül, visszavonhatatlanabbul: 'megyünk'. Az egész verset átszövő kettősség itt is megtalálható. Hiszen szó van egyszer a költő érzéseiről, amik egytől egyig elhagyják a költőt, aki már képtelen arra, hogy eltartsa őket, és elköltöznek valaki másba, aki még képes táplálni őket, vagy 'ahol tejet kapni', és szó van az egész társadalomról, akiket eddig verseinek tejével itatott a költő, és akik szintén mind elpártoltak tőle, mivel szerelmi bánatában képtelen költeményeivel éltetni őket.

A másik, az általános érvényű boci maga az élet. Itt az első szerkezeti egység (Boci boci tarka / Se füle se farka) azt jelenti: az élet sokszínű, de nincs semmi értelme. Felmerülhet a kérdés, vajon miért maradt el a 'de' kötőszó. Persze tisztában vagyunk azzal, hogy a költői nyelv állandóan tömörségre törekszik, de ebben az esetben másról is szó van. Nem teljesen egyértelmű ugyanis a 'de' szó használata. Felfoghatjuk úgy is, hogy itt éppen arról van szó: az élet sokszínű MERT nincsen semmi értelme. Hiszen ahogy valami értelmet, célt kapna, máris sokkal egysíkúbb lenne, sok mindennek lecsökkenne a szerepe, esetleg teljesen értelmét vesztené, megsemmisülne. Ez egy újabb kettősség, amit a költő nem old fel, mindenki kedve szerint értelmezheti, de mindenesetre feltár egy olyan lehetőséget, hogy az élet értelme esetleg éppen az élet értelmetlenségében rejlik.

A második szerkezeti egység egyértelműen a fentiekben már említett 'megyünk' ige köré csoportosul. Ez a rész (Oda megyünk lakni / ahol tejet kapni) természetesen a halálra vonatkozik. Rendkívüli jelentősége van itt a többes szám első személynek, vagyis mi mindannyian 'megyünk', mi mindannyian meghalunk. Pontosan ez az, ami örök érvényűvé teszi a verset, hiszen a halál kérdése mindig foglalkoztatta az embereket, és ameddig lesznek emberek, mindig is foglalkoztatni fogja őket. A vers tehát örök problémát feszeget, és végül is arra jut, a halál az életnél egy nyugodtabb világot biztosít majd, hol tejet kapni', tehát ahol nem kell megfejni az élet tehenét ahhoz, hogy boldogok lehessünk.

Itt tehát közvetve mégiscsak kiderül, mit tart a költő az élet igazi céljának: hogy fáradozva, olykor áldozatokat hozva végül is boldogok legyünk. Ez a vers mondanivalója, örök tanulsága, ami ebbe a játékos formába öntve olyan meggyőzően szakad ki a versből, hogy méltán sorolhatnank ezt a költeményt a legmaradandóbb művészi alkotások közé.
